What’s old is new again and Barbie is no exception.
The Barbie Movie released July 2023 has made Barbie trendy again with all of the “pink” vibe surrounding it’s promotion.
Yes, growing up I had Barbies, yes plural. She was the iconic toy for girls growing up in the 60’s and 70’s and only grew to have more merchandise throughout the decades. Barbie had everything, and mostly she had Ken. I leave that there.
The concept behind Barbie was a female could have everything in life, a career in any field, expense cars, toys, campers and the most coveted man any girl could dream of. She also had friends. The beauty of Barbie from a little girl’s perspective, is you could dress her. From her hat, to her gloves, shoes and pocketbook, you could dress her anyway you wanted. And you could dress multiple Barbies as all of her clothes were interchangeable.
Barbie did fit a stereo female type at the time that was popular, tall, thin, big boobs, blue eyes and long blonde hair. As a brunette I always preferred playing with “Stacy” because she looked more like me. So fast forward a few decades the toy manufacturers finally figured out not everyone wants to play with a doll that doesn’t look like them. A doll you can identify within your imagination. Because when little girls play with their Barbie dolls they’re 100% in their imaginations.
Although Barbie has made a popular appearance, her influence has sparred frenzied marketers to jump on the ride. You can find hot pink just about anything right now. From shoes, hats, purses, belts, gym bags, Yetis and so much more.
