Valentines Day….not just for couples

So here it is again, Valentine’s Day, the most romantic commercialized day of the year. I remember the pressure of this day when I was married and even more awkward when you’re dating later in life. What about those years when you’re alone, not dating by choice or not? How can you feel good about this day that you cannot avoid? I mean just walk into Target right after Christmas, in your face what holiday is next!

So what’s a girl (or guy) to do? I have some ideas…

I think first and foremost when we’re single we have to date ourselves. We have to figure out the things we like to do and treat ourselves to those things. Sort of setting the standard for yourself. Right or wrong, but down the line you can say “well I celebrated a lot myself so you may or may not be so invested in the holiday anymore. Or, you’ve now set an expectation for yourself big or small that you can communicate to your future someone. Then you can make more decisions for yourself from there. (That’s a discussion for another blog)

Anyway, if you love yourself first, (something we’re not taught to do, or maybe that was just my upbringing?) you know and feel cared for and supported. When you are not stingy with yourself, that’s where you learn about yourself and grow. May sound weird, but it doesn’t have to be big in your face, .look what I just bought myself, but can be just depends on what feels authentic to you. I’m a Leo, so I like in your face, the lioness in me I guess…..

Let’s start with Valentine’s Day is a few weeks away, so in order to avoid any disappointment about it, I’m going to plan now what I want to do that day. So what is it that you want to do? Do you want to go out to dinner (not my choice because then you’re likely to be surrounded by couples) but hey, go for it if you like eating out on this day. What about going to a vineyard, movie, concert? Anything happening around town, if you want to actually go out and do something. Research it. Eventbrite is a great app to find local events.

Now what if you want to stay home? What does that look like for you? Do you want to eat your favorite meal with a glass of wine? Prepare for it, buy the ingredients for it, or order it, whatever you need to do and have it already in place the week before. Do you have a sweet tooth? Order the doughnuts or any other food from Goldbelly in this blog or from anyone else in the blog. I myself love pizza it’s my favorite food, so I’d have pizza and wine. I’ll buy my favorite bottle of red to with it to have on hand (Montepulciano Red) and I’ll order my pizza that day. I also love baths, do you? You could by yourself the most amazing scented bath bomb, a fresh rose (to drop the pedals in the tub) and purchase a new plush amazing bath towel. So you get the idea of where I’m headed here right?

You could also buy yourself red lingerie to wear this day and even a new night gown. Anything that makes you feel sexy, special, beautiful and loved. What about a new lotion after your bath or shower, that new scent before going to bed. What about ordering flowers for yourself?
